My Favourite ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ Quote and Me

“I wanted you to see something about her – I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do. Mrs Dubose won, all ninety-eight pounds of her. According to her views, she died beholden to nothing and nobody. She was the bravest person I ever knew.”
(To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee)

My interpretation: Keep fighting. Keep getting heard. Don’t take any futile short cuts just because you’re starting at a disadvantage. Live life with integrity and according to your beliefs.

    That’s beautifully observed thank you.
    My favourite is:
“I’m not saying she’s lying. I say she’s mistaken in her mind”
Tom’s tactful way of describing Mayella’s lies, without offense, without backing down but getting the point across without obscurity.
It has stuck with me all my life. As powerful as writing gets in my humble opinion.
